Common buzzard
Buteo buteo
The Buteo buteo, commonly known as the Common Buzzard, is a bird of prey that is frequently spotted in the Comunidad Valenciana. Locally, it is sometimes referred to as the "ratonero" due to its feeding habits.
This raptor is medium-sized, with a robust body that can measure between 40 to 58 cm in length and a wingspan ranging from 109 to 136 cm. Its plumage is highly variable, typically displaying shades of brown with lighter streaks, giving the bird excellent camouflage among the varied landscapes of the region.
The Common Buzzard is equipped with broad wings and a short neck and tail, allowing for soaring flight patterns that are often witnessed in the skies of the Comunidad Valenciana, especially over open fields and forested areas.
- Diet: It primarily preys on small mammals like rodents, but its diet also includes birds, reptiles, and insects. This diet gives rise to its local name, "ratonero."
- Habitat: The species is versatile and adapts to a range of environments, from forests and agricultural lands to urban areas. In the Comunidad Valenciana, it is often seen in coastal areas and the mountainous regions.
- Behavior: The Common Buzzard is known for its solitary nature but can sometimes be seen in small family groups, particularly during migration or in favorable feeding conditions.
- Conservation Status: As a species, the Buteo buteo is currently not threatened, although habitat preservation is crucial to maintaining healthy populations within the region.
Whether perched atop a treetop or soaring gracefully overhead, the presence of the Common Buzzard adds to the rich biodiversity of the Comunidad Valenciana.
