Eurasian scops owl
Otus scops
Aves Otus scops, commonly known as the European Scops Owl, is a small owl species that can be found in the Comunidad Valenciana region. Locally, it may be referred to as the "Autillo Europeo." This species is noted for its distinctively small size and its nocturnal habits.
The European Scops Owl is characterized by the following features:
- Size: Typically measures around 19-21 cm in length with a wingspan of 47-54 cm.
- Plumage: The plumage is generally grayish-brown with intricate patterns that provide excellent camouflage against tree bark.
- Eyes: It has prominent yellow eyes that contribute to its sharp night vision.
- Ears: The so-called "ear tufts" are not actual ears but feather tufts used for camouflage and communication.
- Voice: Known for its repetitive and soft territorial call, often described as a single, monotonous "püü" sound, repeated every few seconds at night.
Aves Otus scops prefers habitats with open woodlands, gardens, and orchards, where it can easily find prey such as insects and small mammals. It is a migratory bird, primarily breeding in Europe during the warmer months and migrating to sub-Saharan Africa for the winter. Conservation efforts are important for maintaining its population due to habitat loss and degradation.
