Saxicola rubicola
Aves Saxicola rubicola, commonly known as the European Stonechat, is a small passerine bird found across Europe, Asia, and North Africa. In the Comunidad Valenciana, it is a familiar sight, especially in open fields and shrubby areas.
Characteristics:
- Size: The European Stonechat is a small bird, measuring about 11.5 to 13 cm in length.
- Plumage: Males are notable for their striking appearance, featuring a black head, white neck collar, and rich chestnut breast. Females and juveniles have a more subdued brown and buff coloration.
- Voice: The bird's call is a distinctive 'chat-chat', reminiscent of two stones being knocked together.
Habitat: In the Comunidad Valenciana, the European Stonechat is often found in coastal and inland habitats, preferring areas with bushes, shrubs, and scattered trees. It is common in rural landscapes, where it perches prominently to surveil its surroundings.
Diet: This bird is an insectivore, feeding primarily on insects, which it often captures mid-air or by gleaning from vegetation. During the winter, its diet can also include berries and seeds.
Conservation Status: The European Stonechat is generally considered of "Least Concern" by conservation standards, although habitat changes due to agricultural practices can impact its populations locally.
Known as the "Tarabilla Común" in the local language, this bird remains a cherished part of the Comunidad Valenciana's biodiversity and can often be spotted and enjoyed by bird watchers and nature enthusiasts alike.
