Common redshank
Tringa totanus
Aves Tringa totanus, commonly known as the Common Redshank or Archibebe común in Spanish, is a medium-sized wader belonging to the sandpiper family. This bird is a notable species found across the Comunidad Valenciana, especially in coastal wetlands and marsh areas.
Physical Characteristics:
- They possess long, bright orange-red legs which are easily noticeable and a key distinguishing feature.
- Their plumage is primarily grayish-brown during the non-breeding season, with a contrasting white lower half.
- In the breeding season, their back becomes more intricately patterned with speckles and spots providing effective camouflage.
- The beak is straight and slightly upturned at the tip, with a distinctive red coloration at the base and black towards the end.
Behavior and Diet:
- Redshanks are known for their distinctive "teu-teu-teu" call, especially during the breeding season.
- They primarily feed on insects, mollusks, and crustaceans which they forage from mudflats and shallow waters.
