Cabbage white
Pieris rapae
Pieris rapae, commonly known as the Small White or Cabbage White, is a butterfly in the family Pieridae. It is commonly found in the Comunidad Valenciana and is known locally as the Blanquita de la col.
This species is easily recognizable thanks to its distinctive white wings adorned with black tips on the forewings, which are particularly noticeable in males. Females also possess additional black spots, making sex identification relatively straightforward.
- Wingspan: Approximately 32-47 mm
- Habitat: The Pieris rapae thrives in a variety of environments, including gardens, fields, meadows, and open countryside. It is particularly associated with areas where cabbage and other cruciferous plants grow, as these serve as their primary food source.
- Flight Period: In the Comunidad Valenciana, the Small White can typically be seen from early spring through late autumn, benefitting from the region's temperate climate.
- Diet: The adult butterflies primarily feed on nectar from flowers, often frequenting plants like dandelions, thistles, and sweet alyssum. Their caterpillars, known as cabbage worms, feed on the leaves of cabbage, broccoli, and other related plants, sometimes causing significant damage to crops.
- Behavior: This species is known for its rapid and erratic flight pattern, making it a lively addition to any landscape. Despite their somewhat pest-like status, they play an essential role in local ecosystems as pollinators.
Whether admired for their delicate appearance or noted in gardens as a common pest, the Pieris rapae is an integral part of the Valencian fauna and an interesting species for both casual observers and entomologists alike.
