Antalis inaequicostata
Antalis inaequicostata is a species belonging to the phylum Mollusca, commonly found in the coastal waters of the Comunidad Valenciana. This species is a type of tusk shell, recognized by its elongated, tubular shell which is open at both ends, resembling a miniature elephant tusk.
Characteristics:
- Shell: The shell of Antalis inaequicostata is smooth and glossy, typically whitish to pale brown in color. Its distinguished feature is the longitudinal ridges that are unevenly spaced, which gives the species its name "inaequicostata", meaning "unevenly ribbed".
- Size: These mollusks generally grow up to 4 centimeters in length.
- Habitat: They inhabit sandy and muddy substrates where they burrow and maintain a vertical position. Antalis inaequicostata is found at depths ranging from shallow coastal areas to several hundred meters beneath the sea surface.
- Feeding: Like other tusk shells, this species is a detritivore, feeding on organic particles and microorganisms extracted from the sediment they burrow into.
The presence of Antalis inaequicostata in the Comunidad Valenciana reflects the rich marine biodiversity and healthy habitats found along its coastlines.
