Decollate snail
Rumina decollata
Rumina decollata is a species of air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Subulinidae. This mollusk is more commonly referred to by its local name, the "decollate snail."
Characteristics:
- Shell Appearance: The shell is tall, cylindrical, and decollated, meaning it loses the upper whorls of the shell as it matures, giving it a truncated appearance. The color of the shell is typically light brown or tan.
- Size: Adult shells can reach up to 4 cm in length.
- Behavior: Rumina decollata is known for its predatory behavior, primarily feeding on other snails and small invertebrates, as well as decomposing plant material.
- Habitat: It thrives in temperate and Mediterranean climates and is commonly found in gardens, agricultural areas, and natural spaces throughout the Comunidad Valenciana.
This snail plays a role in pest control by preying on pest snails and slugs, which makes it beneficial for gardens and farms. However, care should be taken as they may also impact local snail populations negatively.
