Blanus vandellii

Reptilia Blanus vandellii is a fascinating member of the amphibian family found in the Comunidad Valenciana. Known locally as the "culebrilla ciega," this species is often mistaken for a snake due to its elongated, limbless appearance.
The distinguishing features of Blanus vandellii include:
- Appearance: It resembles a small snake but is actually a legless lizard. Its body is covered with smooth, shiny scales, and it typically grows up to 15 to 20 centimeters in length.
- Coloration: This species usually has a pinkish to brownish hue, helping it blend into its subterranean environment.
- Habitat: Blanus vandellii primarily inhabits burrows and is often found under rocks, logs, and within the loose soil, where it enjoys the cooler, moist conditions.
- Diet: Its diet typically consists of small insects, larvae, and other invertebrates that it encounters within the soil, which it detects through its keen sense of smell.
- Behavior: The species is mostly subterranean, spending much of its time underground. It emerges occasionally, especially after rainfall.
This unique species plays a crucial role in the ecosystem by aiding in soil aeration and controlling insect populations. Although it remains largely unseen, Blanus vandellii is an important component of the fauna found in the Comunidad Valenciana.
