Triangulate cobweb spider
Steatoda triangulosa
Steatoda triangulosa, commonly known as the triangulate cobweb spider, is a member of the arachnid family Theridiidae. This species is often found in households and buildings within the Comunidad Valenciana, where it is locally recognized as araña triangulada.
Key characteristics of Steatoda triangulosa include:
- Size: These spiders are relatively small, with a body length ranging from 3 to 6 mm.
- Color: Their coloration is usually pale yellowish-brown, with distinctive triangular patterns on their abdomen which give them their common name.
- Habitat: They prefer undisturbed areas such as basements, attics, and cellars, as well as under furniture or in corners of rooms.
- Web: They create irregular cobwebs, often in human-made structures where they catch their prey, typically small insects.
- Behavior: Known for being non-aggressive towards humans, their bite is not considered harmful, often compared to a bee sting in terms of discomfort.
While not dangerous, Steatoda triangulosa plays a beneficial role in the ecosystem by controlling the population of insects within homes. Their presence is generally benign, and they are more often a subject of curiosity than concern.
