Wood blewit
Collybia nuda
Fungi Collybia nuda, commonly known as the Wood Blewit, is a recognized species of edible fungi that can be found in the Comunidad Valenciana and other regions. Known locally as the Pie Azul due to its distinctive bluish hue, this mushroom is well-regarded for its unique appearance and culinary value.
- Appearance: The cap of the Wood Blewit is convex and becomes more flattened as it matures, with a diameter ranging from 5 to 15 cm. It has a violet to lilac hue when young, which may fade to a more brownish color with age.
- Stem: The stem is cylindrical, measuring between 5 to 10 cm in height and 1 to 2 cm across. It typically exhibits a bluish tint similar to the cap but can become more whitish or yellowish towards the base in older specimens.
- Gills: Underneath the cap, the gills are initially purple but also tend to lighten as the mushroom matures.
- Habitat: This species thrives in woodland areas, growing on decaying organic matter such as leaf litter, and is commonly found in groups from autumn to early winter in the Comunidad Valenciana.
- Edibility: The Wood Blewit is considered edible when cooked and is appreciated for its nutty flavor. It should always be consumed after being properly cooked, as raw consumption may cause gastrointestinal upset for some individuals.
- Considerations: While generally safe, identification by an expert is advised to avoid confusion with similar-looking toxic species. Due care must be taken to differentiate it from other inedible or poisonous mushrooms that share its habitat.
Owing to its appealing taste and picturesque appearance, Collybia nuda remains a favorite among foragers and mushroom enthusiasts in the region.
