Beech marten
Martes foina
Mammalia Martes foina, commonly known as the stone marten or beech marten, is a small carnivorous mammal found in the Comunidad Valenciana. Locally, it is sometimes referred to as the garduña.
The stone marten is well-recognized by its lithe and agile body, with a body length ranging from 40 to 55 cm, and a bushy tail that adds an additional 22 to 30 cm. It typically weighs between 1 and 2.5 kg.
Characteristics:
- Fur: It has a dense and silky brown fur, with a prominent white or cream-colored throat patch that extends down over the chest, distinguishing it from other martens.
- Diet: As an omnivore, its diet includes small mammals, birds, insects, fruits, and occasionally human-provided food.
- Habitat: The stone marten is highly adaptable, inhabiting wooded areas, rural regions, and even urban areas. In the Comunidad Valenciana, it is often found in areas with a mix of open and forested landscapes.
- Behavior: Known for its nocturnal habits, the stone marten is most active at night when it hunts and forages. During the day, it tends to rest and shelter in tree hollows, undisturbed buildings, or dense vegetation.
Conservation Status: While not currently considered at risk, the stone marten faces threats from habitat loss and vehicular traffic. Conservation efforts in the Comunidad Valenciana focus on maintaining and restoring habitats to ensure the stability of their populations.
