Rodent
Rodentia
Mammalia Rodentia, commonly referred to as rodents, are a diverse and widespread order of mammals characterized by their continuously growing incisors that they must keep worn down by gnawing. This order includes a variety of familiar species, such as mice, rats, squirrels, and beavers, and is the largest order of mammals in terms of species diversity.
In the Comunidad Valenciana, rodents play vital ecological roles. They are essential for seed dispersal, soil aeration, and as a food source for predators. Some common rodents found in the region include:
- Mus musculus (house mouse) - A small and adaptable rodent commonly found in urban areas.
- Rattus rattus (black rat or roof rat) - Recognizable for its agility and ability to climb, often found in buildings and treetops.
- Apodemus sylvaticus (wood mouse) - Known for its large eyes and ears, it inhabits woodlands and hedgerows.
- Microtus arvalis (common vole) - Prefers grassy fields and is an important prey species for many predators.
- Atelerix algirus (North African hedgehog) - While not a rodent, it shares similar habitats and is often mistaken for one due to its size and appearance.
Rodents play a crucial part in the ecosystem, maintaining the balance of plant populations and serving as indicators of environmental health. Their presence in the Comunidad Valenciana reflects the rich biodiversity and the importance of conserving natural habitats in the region.
