Variegated scallop
Mimachlamys varia
Mimachlamys varia, commonly known as the Variegated Scallop or locally as the Vieira Multicolor, is a species of bivalve mollusk belonging to the family Pectinidae. It is a striking component of the marine biodiversity in the Comunidad Valenciana.
The unique features of Mimachlamys varia include:
- Shell Appearance: The shell showcases a vibrant display of colors, ranging from brown and orange to yellow and purple, often in mottled patterns. This coloration provides excellent camouflage on the seafloor.
- Shell Structure: The shell is nearly circular, with distinct radiating ribs that add strength and texture. The edges of the shell are often crenulated, contributing to its unique appearance.
- Size: Typically, the shell can grow up to 7 cm in diameter, although smaller specimens are more common.
- Habitat: Mimachlamys varia is usually found in shallow coastal waters, preferring sandy or gravelly substrates where it can partially bury itself for protection.
- Distribution: This species is distributed widely along the Atlantic coast of Europe and is a notable resident in the Mediterranean Sea, including the Comunidad Valenciana.
In addition to its ecological significance, the Variegated Scallop is admired for its aesthetic appeal and is often sought after by shell collectors. Its presence in the waters of the Comunidad Valenciana adds to the rich maritime heritage of the region.
