Perez's frog
Pelophylax perezi
Pelophylax perezi, commonly known as the Iberian water frog, is a species of true frog in the family Ranidae. Found primarily in the Iberian Peninsula, this amphibian is a common sight in the Comunidad Valenciana and other areas of Spain.
Characteristics:
- Size: Adult frogs can grow to a size of approximately 5 to 8 cm in length.
- Coloration: The Iberian water frog exhibits a range of green to brownish colors with distinctive dark spots on its back, which aid in camouflage amongst aquatic vegetation.
- Habitat: This species thrives in a variety of freshwater habitats including ponds, streams, and marshes. They are highly adaptive and can be found in both natural and man-made water bodies.
- Diet: As carnivorous amphibians, they primarily feed on invertebrates such as insects and arachnids, but they may occasionally consume small vertebrates.
- Reproduction: Breeding occurs in the warmer months, where females lay eggs in water bodies. Tadpoles emerge and undergo metamorphosis to become adult frogs.
The Iberian water frog is a resilient species, quite emblematic of the aquatic ecosystems in the Comunidad Valenciana. It serves as an important indicator of environmental health, with its presence reflecting the condition of the water bodies it inhabits.
