Common pipistrelle
Pipistrellus pipistrellus
Pipistrellus pipistrellus, commonly known as the Common Pipistrelle, is a widespread bat species found throughout Europe, including the Comunidad Valenciana. This small mammal is known in Spanish as murciélago común.
The Common Pipistrelle is one of the smallest bat species in Europe, with a wingspan ranging from 18 to 25 centimeters and a body length of approximately 3.5 to 5.2 centimeters. It weighs between 3.5 and 8.5 grams, making it a petite member of the mammalian fauna of the region.
Key characteristics of the Common Pipistrelle include:
- Its fur is typically a shade of brown, with slightly darker wing membranes.
- The face, ears, and wings are usually darker in color compared to the rest of the body.
- It has a somewhat erratic and fluttery flight pattern, making it easily identifiable in the night sky.
Pipistrellus pipistrellus is typically found in a variety of habitats, ranging from urban areas to woodlands and farmlands. They are nocturnal creatures, emerging at dusk to hunt for insects which they deftly capture in flight.
This species is known to be highly adaptable, often roosting in buildings, trees, and bat boxes provided by enthusiasts. It plays a crucial role in the ecosystem as an insect predator, helping to control pest populations.
In the Comunidad Valenciana, the Common Pipistrelle can be spotted flitting through the twilight, contributing to the rich biodiversity of the region.
