Mediterranean spurge
Euphorbia characias
Plantae Euphorbia characias is a species belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family, commonly found in the Mediterranean region, including the Comunidad Valenciana. Known locally as "Lechetrezna", it is a striking and sculptural plant that adds an architectural element to gardens and wild landscapes.
This perennial shrub typically reaches a height of about 1 to 1.5 meters, with a similar spread. It is characterized by its upright, stout stems and narrow, blue-green leaves that are arranged in a whorled pattern. The plant produces a milky sap that can be irritating to the skin, an attribute common to many members of the Euphorbia genus.
The most distinctive feature of Euphorbia characias is its unique flowering pattern:
- The plant blooms from late winter to early summer.
- It produces large, cylindrical clusters of yellowish green flowers at the top of the stems.
- Each cluster comprises numerous small flowers surrounded by showy bracts.
Euphorbia characias is adapted to dry, sunny environments, making it well-suited for the climate of the Comunidad Valenciana. It prefers well-drained soil and is drought tolerant, making it a popular choice for xeriscaping.
In addition to its ornamental appeal, Euphorbia characias offers ecological benefits, providing nectar and pollen for various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Despite its beauty, caution is advised when handling the plant to avoid skin irritation from its sap.
