Snub-nosed viper
Vipera latastei
Reptilia Vipera latastei, commonly known as the Lataste's viper or, in the local region, as Víbora hocicuda, is a venomous snake species found in the Comunidad Valenciana and other parts of the Iberian Peninsula. This species is of particular ecological interest due to its unique adaptations and status in its native habitats.
Physical Characteristics:
- Size: Adult vipers typically measure between 60 and 70 cm in length.
- Coloration: Their bodies are generally grey or brown, adorned with a distinctive zigzag pattern that provides camouflage against the rocky terrain of their natural environments.
- Head: The viper's triangular head and upturned snout are characteristic features, aiding in identification.
Habitat:
Lataste's vipers thrive in a variety of environments, from rocky and bushy areas to dry, open woodlands. They are typically found at altitudes ranging from sea level to 2,500 meters, favoring areas that offer ample sunlight and cover.
Behavior:
- Diet: They primarily feed on small mammals, birds, and lizards, using their potent venom to subdue prey.
- Reproduction: Breeding typically occurs in the spring, with females giving birth to live young.
- Activity: Although somewhat elusive, they are most active during the warmer months, especially in the early morning and late afternoon.
Conservation Status:
The Víbora hocicuda is considered vulnerable due to habitat loss and fragmentation. Efforts are ongoing to preserve their habitats and monitor populations in order to ensure their survival in the wild.
